About Me

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

David Fionix

It's so wonderful that when my sister was a young girl, she really wanted to learn to play the piano. And so it happened that a very good friend of our father's gave her a purple children's accordion for her birthday. However, she found the instrument extremely modest and ignored it. For me, however, and I was only 3 years old, it was love at first sight.

I started teaching myself to play the accordion and played by ear, especially the music of Yugoslavia at that time. Later, I took private lessons with an accordion teacher for more than 10 years and while I was rehearsing pieces by Bach, Mozart and traditional German folk songs, my real heroes were great accordionists like Branimir Dokic, Mirko Kodic and Goran Alacki.

Again and again, relatives and family friends urged me not only to play Yugoslav folk songs on the accordion, but also to sing them. And when I was 16 and Yugoslavia had already disintegrated due to the civil war, my father persuaded me to take part in a Macedonian singing competition in Karlsruhe - under the pretext: "How are people supposed to find out about your accordion skills if you never show yourself?"

To my great surprise, I won the singing competition and was allowed to participate in one of the most renowned folk festivals of Macedonia, "Tetovski Filigrani" (1996). Here, two miracles happened for me at the same time: The great Goran Alacki not only arranged my first song "Leno bela sevdalino", but I also won the prize for best newcomer with this song. The following two years I took part in the festival again and first won the first audience prize and then the first place of the jury.

However, I almost wet myself when I found out that I would be recording my first song in Macedonia in 1996 and that the festival would also be broadcast live on state television. How was I supposed to master this challenge when I had never had any singing lessons up to that point? So I auditioned with Mannheim's "Queen of the Night", Prof. Edith Jaeger, who accepted me into her master class. She taught me classical singing for six years and my first role was that of Pappageno from Mozart's "Magic Flute".

I went on to record a whole Macedonian folk album with the Macedonian producer Risto Krapovski and promoted it in Macedonia. At the same time, I performed in Germany for years as part of a Balkan band where I was the lead singer and accordionist. My singing teacher Prof. Edith Jaeger tried to persuade me to study singing at the University of Music and Performing Arts. However, I saw how some of the graduate singers in the master class lived a difficult artist's existence, and since I enjoyed mathematics, computer science and economics at least as much as classical singing, I decided to study business informatics. At the same time, I began to produce my own songs.

When I moved to Münster for my doctorate in economics, I expanded my producer activities and wrote German and English songs for the first time. Then I also worked with the British hit producer Phil Harding (Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley), founded my label "EO Records" in Hamburg in 2013 and released my first EP "This Is My World" and my first English-language single "Can You Feel How Much I Love You" in 2014.

I also visited Dieter Bohlen and took part in the 2017 season of the RTL casting show "Deutschland sucht den Superstar". To my great surprise, I made it into the Top 30 and into the "Foreign Recall" to Dubai.

In 2020, I released my second English-language single entitled "The Man Inside".
